MUAY THAI

MUAY THAI

We offer the very best of Thai sport martial arts. Muay Thai 'Thai Boxing' is a modern day ring sport version of Muay Boran 'Old/Ancient Boxing', and is the cultural and national sport of Thailand.

In the early 20th Century, the art was modernised, with the recognition and integration of 'Western Boxing'. The introduction of gloves and tightly controlled rules followed shortly after this. The sport continued to develop, and eventually in the the late 1970's was introduced to the west, with the UK, Holland, Australia, and the US leading the way in advancing the sport outside of Thailand.

At Spirit Thai Boxing and MMA you can choose to train with us for fitness, self defence, or to compete. But what ever your reason, you will always be made to feel welcome, and part of the club.

A grading syllabus is in place for the kids Siam Tigers classes, however, adults have the option of this, no pressure for grading. Although it must be said, that following a structured syllabus will provide a learning route that enables a better learning experience, and arguably make you a better fighter.

The grading syllabus follows a traditional approach, and those that choose to grade will be awarded coloured roped arm bands (Prajiets) for each rank.

K1

K1

Along with Muay Thai, we also offer the option of training an competing purely in the sport of K1.

K1 is a Kickboxing Sport and has been around since 1993 as a competition concept originating from Japan.

At first view you would see many similarities and characteristics to Muay Thai, however there are distinct differences, which include no elbows, and clinches are only permitted to last for a few seconds.

Along with this, in true K-1 tournaments there is no weight classification, everyone fights each other in open competition regardless of size & weight. Competition is usually also in the form of a knockout Grand Prix tournament concept, i.e. winning fighters progress to the next round, eventually the 2 last fighters reach the final. However in the more modern day circuits weight classifications and divisions have been created.

The letter K in K-1 is designated as a representation of the words Karate, Kickboxing, and Kung Fu, Kempo, Kakutougi (the generic Japanese term for "Combat Sports")., and [Tae] Kwon Do. It is believed that the "1" element pertains to the single weight division, and 1 remaining champion.

K-1's predecessor Seidokaikan Karate was formed in 1980 by Kazuyoshi Ishii, a former Kyokushin karate practitioner who had formed his own organization to help promote the best stand-up martial artists. Seidokaikan arranged several successful challenge events against other martial arts organizations, originally using rules based on the Kyokushin Knockdown karate rules, but gradually adapting and changing closer to kickboxing rules. In 1993, Mr. Ishii founded the K-1 organization exclusively as a kickboxing organization, closely cooperating with, but independent from Seidokaikan.

You will also see many Thai Boxing practitioners cross competing in this arena, due to the striking  similarities across the 2 sports.

MMA

MMA

Origins of MMA are believed to date back to Greece in the year 648BC.

The Greeks used this form of fighting on the battlefield, as-well as a spectator sport in the early Olympic games.

The style was locally known as 'Pankration', and was a mix of Boxing, Kicking, and general Street Fighting techniques.

Fast forward a few hundred years, or more, and we have what we know it as today 'Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA'.

Essentially MMA had already been a modern day sport in various isolated capacities (Shooto, Vale Tudo, and Sambo) in countries such as Japan, Russia, and Brazil for many years before the commercial version that we see on our screens today became available.

In 1993 the world witnessed the birth of the UFC, or Ultimate Fighting Championships. In its early days the UFC separated the competition into Striking only, and Grappling only events. However, the promotion struggled to get viewers and US State licencing, so it changed its approach, mixed striking with grappling arts, and gave birth to modern day MMA, the rest is history.

At Spirit MMA we acknowledge the routes of MMA and bring together, through the expertise of the coaching staff, an eclectic but extremely effective MMA style.

The style is an explosive combination of Western Boxing, Freestyle Grappling, Freestyle Striking, Traditional Judo, and Muay Thai.

We do not have a grading system for MMA, however we do recognise that the learning experience needs to be, and requires, constructive, efficient, and effective progression.

Therefore, all of our students and fighters will go through the 3 phases of learning: Fundamentals, Intermediate, and Advanced. (previous experience and ability is acknowledged and taken into account).

Train with us for fun, fitness, self defence, or competition, but what ever path you choose for your journey, remember to leave egos at the door.

Fighter Specific Strength & Conditioning Training

Spirit Thai Boxing and MMA specialise in striking and grappling oriented Strength & Conditioning programmes, for fighters who are preparing to start an 8 - 12 week pre fight training camp.

With qualified Olympic Weight Lifting and Fight Specific S&C Coaches we are the East Midlands primary solution for all of your pre fight needs.

We put the science into your training

Anyone can put a basic circuit session together, and go to the local gym to perform some bench pressing, bicep curls, and the odd deadlift, and although you may get slightly fitter, this will not get your explosive strength and speed working to the max, and it will not provide you with the required consistent repetition of periodised training to correctly condition your body in readiness for 3, 5, 8 or 12 rounds of fighting.

Correct injury prevention will almost always be overlooked in standard fitness routines. This is not just about consideration to what you are going to be performing in a cardio, or weights session, but also what you will be doing as part of your preparation around these sessions, such as the timing of additional martial arts training, eating, sleeping, stretching, personal/life commitments, and so on. We will factor all of this into your plan for you, and also work closely with any other training, or medical professionals that require input into your progression.

Our S&C programmes will increase your ability to train, and then fight, at a higher level of intensity

We have access to an array of specialist equipment to support your programme

We will develop a phased 8 to 12 week periodised programme tailored to increase your all-round ability to fight more efficiently and effectively, this will include:

  • A strength assessment of your 1rm

  • We will look at nutrition & Psychology

  • Get an understanding of current injuries and any medical conditions

  • We will look at the environment you will be fighting in

  • We will also assess 'where possible' your opponents approach to training, previous performances etc.

  • The periodised programme will cover 8 to 12 weeks of intensive functional activity through either 4 or 6 phases,  increasing the intensity, and introducing new elements as you progress:

Both of the phased programmes will include weekly routine combinations of the following exercises:

  • Strength

  • Strength Speed

  • Strength Speed & Strength

  • Strength & Strength Speed & Speed Strength

  • Power Exercises

  • Agility Exercises

  • Plyometric Exercises

  • Weight Cutting

  • High Intensity Interval Training (HIITS)

The final phase of the programme will be a taper, reduction in intensity by functional movement percentage and resistance. This will allow your body to align itself, finishing with you being at your optimal performing ability.
